For the first time, I would like talk about name. Why? Because everything must have a name. And my name is Rini Aisyah. ^_^

Let's find what is a 'Name'?

I checked Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English. I found the definitions are:

(1) word(s) by which a person, animal, place, thing, etc is known and spoken to or of;
(2) (sing only) reputation; fame;
(3) famous person.

Then I found this from wikipedia:
Naming is the process of assigning a particular word or phrase to a particular object or property. This can be quite deliberate or a natural process that occurs in the flow of life as some phenomenon comes to the attention of the users of a language. Many new words or phrases come into existence during translation as attempts are made to express concepts from one language in another.

Based on language and country, i've found the difference in style, forms and system for family name. A family name or last name is a type of surname and part of a person's name indicating the family to which the person belongs.

Let's check!

My name is Rini Aisyah, but my surname name is not Aisyah. How come? My culture, Indonesia, do not generally use the Western naming practice of a given first name and a family last name. And the majority of Indonesians do not have family names. Interesting, isn't it?

But, I have my surname, anyway.....

so interesting! In South Africa we abviously follow the western tradition of forename and surname, its interesting to learn how other cultures do these things!

So are you saying that in the Batak culture, you cant marry someone with the same surname because you're probably related? What about someone with the same surname who isn't Batak? :)
